Warren Greene
Warren Greene received his BA from Freed–Hardeman University and MFA from Memphis College of Art. He began his career as a landscape artist but gradually moved toward abstracted landscape. In his recent work, paint is layered and selectively manipulated on wood panels to create a kind of woven texture. His paintings contains layer upon layer of highly sanded and translucent surfaces that conceal and reveal loose atmospheric forms in a vibrant palette of color.
STATEMENT
The work is the residuals of the tense intersections between the digital and the analog. These tensions are largely subconscious, but are immensely important to how we see the world and ourselves and the relation between the two.
This residual is a result of a process that is indeterminate until the very end. The forces at play fight and dance with one another to form something unexpected but familiar. Forming, scraping, sanding, reforming again and again, each action standing in for ideas and emotions that wrestle with one another. I try not to make paintings, but artifice—artificial surfaces.
