Lisa Weiss
Kentucky based artist Lisa Weiss received her BFA in Painting and Sculpture from the Middle Tennessee State University and an MFA in Painting and Drawing from Louisiana State University. Her works is included in numerous public and corporate collections including Hunter Museum of Art (Chattanooga, TN) and Tennessee Watercolor Society (Nashville, TN). Weiss' paintings are process driven, created with a variety of water based materials such as ink, watercolor and acrylic on collaged papers. She constructs her surfaces by seeking out varieties of paper with idiosyncratic tones and structures such as Bhutanese, Kozo, Lokta, Mulberry and Arches paper.
STATEMENT
My work explores flow consciousness through mark making, patterning, gesture and paring down to essentials. For me, the process of art making reflects living in general. I am interested in what the process has to teach about living wisely. The connection between place, process, materials and form in relation to a meditative state is essential. Non objective forms that predate label, forms imperfect and evolving are of interest. The work is inspired by architecture, primitive art, metaphysics and the practice of yoga. I am concerned for the state of the earth, the feminine wave and the reflective slow revolution of expanding consciousness.
