Bob Nugent
Bob Nugent received his MFA in Painting from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1971. Since that time he has been awarded numerous grants and fellowships including a Tiffany Foundation Fellowship, NEA Fellowship, Fulbright Travel Grant and a California Arts Council Grant for his work in Brazil. In 2005, after 34 years of teaching painting and drawing, Bob retired from Sonoma State University and was elected to Professor Emeritus in Art at Sonoma. Bob has had over 120 solo exhibitions and has been included in over 650 group exhibitions throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and South America. Over the past thirty years he has made repeated sojourns to South America and in particular the Amazon Basin of Brazil. Returning to Brazil now three to four times a year, Bob continues his research and study of the flora and fauna of the Amazon Region as well as other parts of the country. But it is the vital layer, as Nugent calls it, which interests him the most. As Donald Kuspit, New York art critic, wrote in his description of Bob Nugent's work, "The vital layer, the layer of earth that supports life, that is the real theme of Nugent's works." This generative layer exists below "the earth's crust, where our feet touch the ground," as Nugent says. Nugent's art is a meditation of this layer, "where seeds, roots, plants, start to gestate." Nugent's art is a reminder that unless man's inhumanity to nature stops-unless we make a deliberate effort to preserve the vital layer, man will self-destruct."
STATEMENT
Brazil and the Amazon River Basin have been the subject and inspiration for my work for more than thirty years. Naturalistic forms resembling beehives, vertebrae, cocoons, anthills, plant forms and insects are spread across the surface of the work. The Amazon River is an apt metaphor for the act of churning up remembered objects and sights, gathered while traveling along its rough course.
The work transcribes a memory of these objects and impressions of what was seen and felt. In its flow, the river boils an object to the surface only to swallow it up again to resurface later. My palette is often subdued beneath a layer of darkness, suggesting mystery. These impressions are a memory of the river bound on both sides by a high, dark jungle; foreboding and beautiful. When the jungle takes you in, it takes you in whole.
In visiting the region three or four times a year I find that the landscape has many moods. These new paintings show the contrast and conflict between the beauty of the Amazon and its continued destruction. Modern man sees the rainforest as a tremendous resource and at the same time we are in the process of depleting it. Although the indigenous groups have lived harmoniously in that environment for generations, we cannot yet find the balance needed to protect this resource for the future.
