Amy dean

Based in Clarksville, upcoming artist Amy Dean earned her BFA from Austin Peay State University in 2017. She has had solo and group shows throughout MIddle Tennessee and was honored with the Purchase Award for the CECA Student Art Collection of the APSU Permanent Art Collection (2016, 2017). Having Billy Renkl as her mentor, Dean works on found toned papers and parchment and with rich materials such as gold, silver and palladium leaf, mineral pigments and watercolor. Displaying an incredible sense for detail and delicate linework, Dean sees her work as relics of her quest for truth and beauty.

STATEMENT

Every day I am taking in forms from books, nature, literature and experience; I transcribe them with my intense fetish for rich materials into intricate, devotional friezes. They are relics of my quest for truth and beauty. In the process of making them, I assert my duty and responsibility to myself to not quit, to not waste away, and to not die and forfeit this one life that I have. In this intense feeling of time and space and my historical relationship to all the things that have gone before me, I stand in awe. Life is so precious and quick, I want to bring a seriousness to this notion to encourage myself and the viewer to look inward and reassess what is important and real.
